A BOOK OF FAIRIES
AND THEIR MAGIC

Bilibin's Baba Yaga

The belief in fairies was an almost universal attribute of early folk culture. The Old French fée, had the meaning "enchanter." Thus féerie meant a "state of fée" or "enchantment." Fairies are often depicted enchanting humans, casting illusions to alter their emotions and perceptions so as to make themselves at times alluring, frightening, or invisible. Modern English inherited the two terms "fae" and "fairy," along with all the associations attached to them. The question as to the essential nature of fairies has been the topic of myths, stories, and scholarly papers for a very long time. The traditional characteristics of fairies are depicted in European literature in such works as Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet; The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser; Tales of Mother Goose, by Charles Perrault; Grimm's Fairy Tales, by the brothers Grimm; a fairy-tale series by Andrew Lang, called the colored fairy tale books, for example, The Blue Fairy Tale Book and The Red Fairy Tale Book. In the earlier versions of Tolkien's Middle Earth, the creatures later known as Elves were called Fairies. In folklore fairies are generally considered beneficent toward humans. They can help increase finances and good fortune, bring love and success, enhance intuition, and ward off negativity. They are sensitive and capricious, however, and often inclined to play pranks; so if their resentment is not to be aroused, they must be spoken well of and always treated with deference. Croker has described fairies as being “a few inches high, airy and almost transparent in body; so delicate in their form that a dewdrop, when they chance to dance on it, trembles, indeed, but never breaks.” The term fairy is also loosely applied to such beings as brownies, gnomes, elves, nixies, goblins, trolls, dwarfs, pixies, kobolds, banshees, sylphs, sprites, and undines. The folk imagination not only conceives of fairyland as a distinct kingdom, but also imagines fairies as living in natural surroundings such as hills, trees, and streams and sees fairy rings, fairy tables, and fairy steeds in nature.

WEE PEOPLE
Since these elementary beings are earth spirits, they preferably work the soil and tree roots, to which they grant power. They look like funny little old folk, as they belong to a race coming from the beginning of times. They also guard mountain treasure and can be found where precious stones are. Skilled at alchemy, blacksmithing, crafts, cooking and plant lore; these tiny creatures build their homes under aging trees or in mountain caves. They only go out at sunrise or sunset. They are friends of animals, they speak their same language and protect them from danger. The best feasts are when the freezing winds blow over the woods dancing and playing, and some prefer rain for their dances.

Magical Realism aims to seize the paradox of the union of opposites.  Magical realism is characterized by two conflicting perspectives, one based on a rational view of reality and the other on the acceptance of the supernatural as reality.   magical realism involves the fusion of the real and the fantastic,   The presence of the supernatural in magical realism is often connected to the primeval or "magical’ Indian mentality, which exists in conjunction with European rationality.  magical realism offers a world view that is not based on natural or physical laws nor objective reality.  However, this world is not separated from reality either. fantastical visual imagery from the subconscious mind is used The following elements are found in many magical realist novels and films, but not all are found in all of them and many are found in novels or films that could fall under other genres.

Contains fantastical elements; Incorporates legend or folklore. Ends leaving the reader uncertain, whether to believe in the magical interpretation or the realist interpretation of the events in the story

The fantastic elements may be intuitively "logical" but are never explained and for this reason characters accept rather than question the logic of the magical element. Exhibits a richness of sensory details

Distorts time so that it is cyclical or so that it appears absent. Another technique is to collapse time in order to create a setting in which the present repeats or resembles the past.

Inverts cause and effect, for instance a character may suffer before a transformation occurs. Uses a mirroring of either past and present, astral and physical planes, or of characters

Presents events from multiple perspectives, such as those of belief and disbelief or the fertile oasis and the sanctuary to the city.

Note that it is common in some fantasy stories to include a frame story, in which the central, fantastic story is explained as a dream. Because the main story works equally well with or without the frame story, and since either way the reader feels no ambiguity about choosing between the magical and the real interpretation, these are usually not included in the category of magical realism.
Many early magical realists such as Alejo Carpentier and Miguel Angel Asturias studied with the surrealists, and surrealism, as an international movement, influenced many aspects of Latin American art. Surrealists, however, try to discover and portray that which is above or superior to the “real” through the use of techniques such as automatic writing, hypnosis, and dreaming. Magical realists, on the other hand, portray the real world itself as having marvelous aspects inherent in it.

Slipstream - Slipstream describes fiction that falls between "mainstream" literature and the fantasy and science fiction genres (the name itself is wordplay on the term "mainstream"). Where science fiction and fantasy novels treat their fantastical elements as being very literal, real elements of their world, slipstream usually explores these elements in a more surreal fashion, and delves more into their satirical or metaphorical importance. Compared to magical realism the fantastical elements of slipstream also tend to be more extravagant, and their existence is usually more jarring to their comparative realities than that which is found in magic realism

Pseudorealism, pseudo-realism, or pseudo realism is a visual arts style, in which an altered view of reality is presented. In film, the term refers to heavy use of special effects to create a fantasy with the illusion of reality. In art, it is a style in which reality is depicted through abstract symbols and off-beat color schemes.

emphasis on the techniques of the Old Masters that gave the Fantastic Realist painters a grounding in realism (expressed with a clarity and detail some have compared to early Flemish painting) combined with religious and esoteric symbolism.
