The Germany of TacitusThe Oxford Translation Revised, with Notes[1858] |
This is one of the earliest descriptions of the Germanic tribes, by the Roman author Tacitus, written in 98 C.E. Because the Germanic tribes were pre-literate, we have very little hard data on their customs, beliefs and day to day lives. Most of what we know today is based on classical descriptions such as Tacitus and Caesar, and what archeologists have discovered. Among other passages of interest, Tacitus discusses practices such as divination, Barding, and human sacrifice.
